How to change the world | 2.4 minute read

One small step will get you on your way

Sunlight breaks through the outer edges of the blackout blind. I pull on the cord to lift the shade and let the light pour in. My wife left earlier for work. I walk the hallway to wake my kids — blinds at 7:00, a gentle kiss, a whispered hello, then lights on at 7:30.

Downstairs, the kids eat breakfast while I slip lunches into their backpacks. We swap spots — I clean, they zip their jackets and head for the door.

"Have a good day at school. Love you."

"Love you."

The door slams shut.

I walk upstairs. The bed’s a mess.

"If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day." - Admiral McRaven

In his book 'Make Your Bed', Admiral McRaven emphasizes that completing small tasks can set the tone for the day, creating a sense of accomplishment and building momentum for bigger challenges.

It releases dopamine.

I smile and start my day a little happier.

The pebble

Check out Admiral McRaven’s viral commencement speech video where he passionately delivers the philosophy behind "making your bed" as a metaphor for tackling life’s bigger challenges.

The challenge

Start your day with one small win. Tomorrow morning, make your bed. Then, pick one small task to complete right after — whether it's loading the dishwasher, writing down your top priority for the day, or stretching for five minutes. Notice how these small wins build momentum and set a positive tone for the rest of your day.
